Interdisciplinary studies approach is the knowledge production that is often used as a route of creating broader explanations about a particular field of study in which a broad area of academic interest contains many topics from various disciplines. It also connects to the theories, knowledge and facts across different branches of knowledge. Sometimes the prevalence of terms similar to interdisciplinary such as cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary and others that determine various degree of overlap cause confusion. In fact, many view these approaches as useful in providing a broader framework from different disciplines to explain phenomenon in the world around us and to connect ideologies, and learnings across disciplines. The term of interdisciplinary is difficult to define accurately because a lot of people’s misunderstanding of the term causes the confusions rather than approach.
Therefore, are there benefits to the interdisciplinary approaches in production of knowledge? Although, the overlap of fields of study of academic disciplines can cause some confusion, adopting interdisciplinary approaches to the production of knowledge is profitable. The word “confusion” in the title may be considered to be a subjective state of mind, which may also mean that the knowledge claims lack an objective footing. In fact, for people, especially students, adopting interdisciplinary approaches to the production of knowledge may allow them to making connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries. In this way, students can not only learn and apply to the knowledge gained in one scope of discipline but also deepen the learning experience.
CLAIM 1: (CLARITY)
First, Interdisciplinary approaches to the production of knowledge may actually help to shed light on a particular field that a single discipline cannot clarify. An interdisciplinary can derive from multiple disciplines that provide different ideas, distinct ways of thinking and approaching certain subjects. In this world, a lot of things around us consist of multidimensional, complex, and interconnected dynamic systems that are necessary to know and understand from various disciplines, not only from one particular field of study. Therefore, these multiple viewpoints work as different parts to put together a whole meaningful subject.
A lot of researchers have pointed out that the concept of a discipline is hard to define in a particular field because reference to the term itself only characterizes and focuses on the prevalence rather than the straightforward in its meaning. Even Linbniz, a Greek philosopher of the seventeenth century let the Greek thinkers and historians set forth the ideas to unify and integrated knowledge to create a system of universal justice. He required himself as well as his fellow philosophers to discover and attempt different fields of studies including linguistics, economics, management, ethics, law philosophy and politics. From 1960s to 1970s, hundreds of years after his challenge, architects, engineers and other people from different areas of study successfully employed the multidisciplinary approach in the UK such as sociologists, geographers, and economists. Leinbniz’s great efforts of clarifying in interdisciplinary made deep and important contributions to the different field of disciplines. Disciplines may have some institutional manifestation in the form of subjects taught at universities or other professional and academic associations. Still it is often the case that disciplines have no clear explanations and facts even as a subject taught in an academic setting, and interdisciplinary studies can create an application of different disciplines that lead to greater creativity.
