Cyle VanDerwerken11/28/17Artillery used in WW2    Artillery weapons are large caliber guns used in warfare on land. the purpose of artillery weapons is to shoot a large round a much farther distance than a traditional rifle can. “Artillery has played a critical role in providing close support to the infantry, bombarding fortifications, defending coasts, and in the 20th century, attacking tanks and aircrafts beginning with the initial settlements”. In september 1939 hitler invaded poland from the west a few days later france and britain declared war on germany starting WW2 on september 17th. “Cannons had powerful flat trajectory to batter down fortification walls or to shatter troop formations, while howitzers had curved trajectories for lobbing projectiles over fortification walls or into troop formations  Colonial artillery fired several types of projectiles, among them: solid shot, an exploding shell that was detonated by a fuse; canister, which was a can filled with musket balls; and grapeshot, a cluster of iron balls grouped around a wooden spindle and covered by a heavy cloth netting. Although artillery technology had changed dramatically since the colonial era the basic role of artillery is still the same field artillery still provide close support of infantry and armor coastal artillery have become obsolete due to high velocity naval ordnance and especially aircraft and missiles but now anti air artillery is very useful because due to the new airborne weapons”.”especially aircraft and missiles but now anti-air artillery is very useful because due to the new airborne weapons.Vanderwerken 2″(WW2 history channel said)The beginning of WW2″ is July 7, 1937, when the “Marco Polo Bridge Incident” led to a prolonged war between Japan and China, and September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, which led Britain and France to declare war on Hitler’s Nazi state in retaliation”. “(history.com said) Coming just two decades after the last great global conflict, the Second World War was the most widespread and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries and resulting in more than 50 million military and civilian deaths (with some estimates as high as 85 million dead). Sparked by Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939, the war would drag on for six deadly years until the final Allied defeat of both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945″. Land, Sea, and Air.  Heavy guns were an essential part of the ground attack. At sea, the use of naval rifles on the big ships was used to prepare beaches for troop landing. Anti-aircraft artillery (FLAK)  was a major weapon against bombers. In sea battle guns, bombs and rockets mounted on planes were the main forms of attack against ships. Battleships going at each other with naval rifle fire were rather rare in WW2. in most naval battles enemy ships rarely saw each other. In 1944, Americans had gained a marked superiority in numbers and effectiveness of its big guns. General William H. Simpson remarked”  “Never send an infantryman in to do a job that an artillery shell can do for him”Vanderwerken 3″(owlcation.com said)The use of artillery reached its peak in World War II. “The technical development between the world wars, particularly in the United States, created a system that was second to none. Time and time again in postwar interviews, German soldiers mentioned the fear that American artillery engendered along the front lines. They knew that as soon as an American spotter plane appeared over their positions, it would only take minutes before a massive barrage rained down death and destruction. There was no place to hide. The multitude of different caliber weapons combined with pre-configured firing tables meant no escape from its power”. No matter how deep you tried to dig or how far you tried to run”.”One of the keys to the success of the artillery branch in World War II lays in the structure of the battalion and its personnel. Whether it is within a division or as part of a Corps artillery group, the battalion was the primary unit structure for the artillery branch in World War II. Within those battalions were some of the most highly skilled personnel that the U.S. Army had throughout the war. Between the wars, there were important changes to the standard practices of the branch. The unit structure was evaluated, standard operating procedures were rewritten, and new technologies came online. Regardless of the theater in which they operated, the branch was able to put all of these innovations to use”Vanderwerken 4(Artillery Battalions in World War II said)”The battle of Normandy otherwise known as d-day is the single worst battle for America in WW2. The Battle of Normandy was fought during world war 2  in the summer of 1944, between the Allied nations and German forces occupying Western Europe. More than 60 years later, the Normandy Invasion, or D-Day, remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy in occupied France. How the battle of Normandy happened is that America was invading Normandy but the Germans were waiting on them to arrive the Americans walked straight into a trap the American troops were massacred as soon as the doors dropped on the boats the troops were being carried on the American troops were being slaughtered but we ended up winning the battle we lost more troops than the Germans we lost over 3 million troops there were very few survivors of the terrible battle.British and Canadian troops met heavy resistance from the German forces defending the area but were able to punch inland, securing safe landing zones for reinforcements. The German failure to successfully defend the Normandy area from the Allied liberation forces, in essence, doomed Hitler’s dream of a Nazi-controlled “Fortress Europe” and marked the beginning of the end for Germany”.”The exact number of men on both sides who died that day will probably never truly be known. Different sources cite different numbers of Allied, U.S. and German casualties”
